Chaplains play a unique role within the Australian Army by enhancing military capability through the religious ministry and pastoral care they offer members and their families, and the advice and support given to commanders within Australia and on operations overseas.
Chaplains provide essential counselling and support both mentally and spiritually to Army personnel across all faiths and to those of no religious affiliation.
Attention to the spiritual needs of members of the Army is regarded as a matter of the highest importance, and where a serving member is of a faith group not represented in chaplaincy because of limited numbers of adherents, efforts can be made to seek advice and religious support at a local level.
Army Chaplains provide opportunities for worship (corporate or individual and by meeting the needs of the various faith groups, such as Sunday morning church services, Anzac Day services, deaths and baptisms), pastoral care (the care of individuals or groups in any number of personal situations) and character and personal development (teaching ethics, or ‘life skilling’ for example).
Army recognises the significance of religious faith in people’s lives and upholds the freedom of religious practice. Defence personnel are encouraged to practice their beliefs according to their freedom of choice.
