Sappers’ immediate action

By Cpl Alisha Carr

THE professionalism and humility for which Australian soldiers are renowned was brought to life recently when two Victorian sappers attempted to resuscitate a dying man in a hardware store.

Cpl Gordon Daly and Spr Duncan Dear, 4CER, in the presence of store staff and witnesses acted without question or delay and performed CPR on Colin Scott, a staff member at Bunnings Warehouse in Croydon, Vi ctoria.

Cpl Daly said they saw the man collapse and acted immediately.

“We checked his breathing and began carrying out the appropriate procedures,” he said.

“We didn’t really think about it at the time, it kind of just happened and we responded.

“Unfortunately the man died.”

Two witnesses, Des and Jason Saaghy, said they were impressed with the outstanding performance of the two soldiers.

“The act of attempting to give a man back his life is one that should not go unnoticed, for this is the real Anzac spirit – this is why a select few wear the uniform,” they said.

“The bond between soldiers is commonly unknown to civilians; however, the bond that soldiers have with their country is not, sadly, it is only measured in the way that soldiers conduct themselves among civilians.

“It is always a proud and stirring moment when one sees an act of compassion.

“The act of duty and compassion by the two soldiers reflects the comradeship, esprit de corps and the leadership of all ranks. It truly was a proud moment. Well done.”
