CAPT Aleks Strikis has defeated some of the Army’s top marksmen to claim victory at Champion Shot Army (CSA) held at Singleton September 19-21.
The Captain from HQ 2 Div has been shooting since he was a young boy and perfected target shooting while he was at school. Capt Strikis competed in the CSA for the first time in 2005 and won the competition this year by a narrow margin.
“It feels pretty special because there were a lot of good shooters on the team and in the end the score came down to one point,” Capt Strikis said.
Competition director Lt-Col Ian Robinson said this year was an exciting competition between the title holder WO2 Andrew Munn and Capt Strikis.
“The competition on the last day was quite tight between first, second and third. WO2 Munn has won the CSA twice. He was heading for a good run again this year but Capt Strikis nibbed him at the post on the last day,” he said.
Shooters competed over three days for the Powder Horn, Rothmans and Weatherby trophies and the Champion Shot of the Army Medal. On day one of competition the shooters contended the Powder Horn trophy, in which serials were shot from different ranges, at different targets, using different firing positions. Cpl Phillip Johansen from 1RTB came in first place to claim the coveted trophy.
On the second day firers conducted the Rothmans practice, which was again a series of shoots that tested their marksmanship capabilities at varying ranges and in different firing positions, with snap, deliberate and rapid serials. WO2 Andrew Munn from 51 FNQR led the shoot and also claimed the Weatherby, an aggregate of the previous two shoots.
