Prime Minister visits Operation Astute in Timor
The newly-elected Prime Minister of Australia, Kevin Rudd, and Foreign Minister Stephen Smith, stopped off in Timor-Leste for a whirlwind tour.
They visited soldiers from the International Stabilisation Force (ISF) at the helicopter base in Dili.
The special guests ate lunch with troops and Australian Federal Police officers before the Prime Minister addressed the crowd.
After lunch, the Prime Minister received a briefing from the Commander of the ISF, Brigadier John Hutcheson.
The Prime Minister also met the President of Timor-Leste, José Ramos-Horta and the Prime Minister, Xanana Gusmão.
There are around 780 Australian Defence Force personnel currently serving in Timor-Leste as part of Operation Astute, the Australian Government response to the Timorese Government’s request for assistance in restoring peace to their country.
The Australians, as part of the ISF, are assisting the Government of Timor-Leste and the United Nations to provide a secure environment for all.
Police from Australia and 24 other nations throughout the world provide security in Dili. The ADF provides support to these police operations as required.
The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) is working alongside the ADF to assist with this mission. |
