Major General Matt Burr, AM

Major General Matt Burr assumed command of the 2nd (Australian) Division on 07 December 2024.

Major General Burr enlisted in the Australian Army as an apprentice in 1986 and, in 1993, graduated from the Royal Military College at Duntroon.

Major General Burr has held command appointments as Squadron Commander of 108th Signal Squadron; Commanding Officer of 5th/6th Battalion, Royal Victoria Regiment; and Commander of the Australian contingent for Exercise Suman Protector in Malaysia.

Major General Burr has served in staff appointments within the Directorate of Reserve Officer Career Management and as Acting Director-General of Reserves. He has also been a senior instructor in multiple roles, including at Melbourne University Regiment and the Royal Military College.

Major General Burr’s senior leadership roles have included appointments as the Deputy Commander of 2nd (Australian) Division and the Commander of 4th Brigade.

Major General Burr concurrently served as Commander of Joint Task Force 646 (Operation Bushfire Assist) and Commander of Joint Task Force 629.2 (Operation Covid-19 Assist and Operation Flood Assist 2022). Major General Burr was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for his leadership in these operational appointments.

Major General Burr deployed on Operation Tanager in 2000 as part of the United Nations Military Observer headquarters in Timor-Leste. In 2015, Major General Burr also deployed on Operation Highroad (Resolute Support) as the Chief of International Engagement to the Afghanistan Government Ministries within NATO headquarters.

In his civilian career, Major General Burr is a Fire Rescue Victoria officer. He has significant multiagency and integrated campaigning experience. In 2009, he deployed to Victoria’s Black Saturday operations and was part of the Australian Government’s response to the Christchurch earthquakes in 2011, where he was awarded a New Zealand Fire Service citation.

Major General Burr is married to Narelle and has two adult sons. He enjoys outdoor activities and is a keen follower of Australian rules football.
