Soldier Training

Training breakdown

Recruit training

Duration: Approximately 10 weeks for full-time members or 3 weeks for Reservists.

Location: Kapooka, Wagga Wagga, NSW.

In both classroom and outdoor environments, you'll be challenged both mentally and physically, becoming highly skilled in weapon handling and shooting, first aid, communications, navigation and living in the field. Although it can be demanding, you’ll gain a sense of achievement, purpose and confidence during basic training, and on completion of the course, feel proud of what you’ve achieved. Keep in mind, the priority of our instructors is to help you succeed.

Overview

The Royal Military College in Duntroon (RMC) is one of the world’s finest and most respected military training institutions. It builds on your ambition and drive to mould you into a leader.

Just 12 months of training at RMC will give you transferrable skills and help you reach your full leadership potential. You could be in command of your own platoon of soldiers. Or, if you're already a qualified professional, work in your specialist field in the Army while you complete up to 41 days of military and leadership training.

RMC is much more than just a world-class military institution – it’s a dynamic community. You’ll live in comfortable housing and learn in modern facilities. Plus, you’ll enjoy an outstanding social and sporting life.

Initial Military Training (IMT)

Location of course: Royal Military College, Duntroon Canberra, ACT

Duration of course: 12 months

Your training at RMC is made up of three terms each of approximately six months duration. Cadets in their first term are referred to as Third Class, second term cadets as Second Class and third term cadets as First Class.

Training overview:

Third Class: In this first term you will be given a basic grounding in battle craft, dismounted infantry minor tactics, navigation, first aid, weapon training, character development, communication skills, military history and small-team leadership. At RMC, the Third-Class training is conducted on the basis that you have no prior military knowledge or experience.

Second Class: By the end of Second Class, you will have grasped command and leadership skills at section and platoon levels. You will have received further instruction in battle tactics, military history, administration, training and communication skills. You can apply this knowledge and experience in the field and practise at section command level, expanding to platoon level towards the end of Second Class.

First Class: By now you will be ready to put your knowledge into practice at the section, platoon and company level. Your understanding of strategic issues, management, military history and leadership will also be further developed.

After graduation you will be assigned to one of the Army's specialised branches, known as Corps. Then you can put into professional practice all that you've learned. Initially you will be required to complete in-service Corps training and familiarisation. You may then find yourself leading soldiers on operations physical training drills, tactical assaults or managing any number of vital Army functions. Graduates are commissioned as Lieutenants.

During RMC (military training) and Initial Employment Training (Regimental or Logistics Officers Basic Course etc), your accommodation, meals and utilities will be subsidised, but you will pay a contribution out of your salary during your time at RMC.
