The role of the Australian Army Legal Corps (AALC) is to provide advice, services and support on all aspects of law and the management of legal affairs.
The Australian Army Legal Corps consists of regular and Army Reserve commissioned officers who provide specific legal advice to commanders, and general legal advice to all ranks.
All AALC personnel must be admitted to practice as Australian Legal Practitioners.
Legal officers can:
- specialise in operational law, administrative law, and/or disciplinary law
- appear on behalf of members of the Australian Defence Force charged with service offences
- appear as prosecuting officers
- assist boards of inquiry.
Promotion and level of pay is determined by experience as well as recognised levels of legal competency. These are closely associated with obtaining post-graduate qualifications.
Many members of the AALC have been appointed as Queen's Counsel or Senior Counsel, and a number have been elevated to various Australian courts.
